Online Motor Tax (OMT)

Role: UI Developer / Associate UX Consultant

OMT is a service provided by the Department of Transport in Ireland which allows users to pay their motor tax online as well as providing information relating to motor tax laws and regulations.

Version 1 was approached by OMT to help with the redesign of their website as well as helping them migrate to a new payments system that would remove the burden of handling user's payment details from their internal system.

The aim of the redesign was to help improve the ease of use of the site as well as making the site mobile responsive, since OMT is a state-run service the redesign also had to account for the Irish Language (Gaeilge) as well as accessibility guidelines which were coming as part of an EU directive.

I was brought on to the project to lead the mobile responsive UI development and to resolve any UX issues that the client believed to be present as the original designer had been moved to a new project (the joys of consultancy).

Despite a high-fidelity mock-up and being signed-off by the client there was no such mock-up for the responsiveness. This meant I had complete control over the mobile design and would have to present my designs to the client remotely.

This presentation was an exercise in defending my design decisions and explaining (with relevant articles) the UX conventions and principles that led to me making these decisions.

The site eventually went live, and the customer was delighted with the result. The difference between the old and new versions of the site is night and day. The new system has removed a great deal of pain points from the process of paying for your motor tax online, unfortunately I was unable to secure free motor tax for myself.
